Online Education with FlexTraining

Introduction

Training your internal employees, students or external customers is more critical than ever. Today's worker must be a knowledge worker and must keep pace with a constantly growing volume of product and industry information.

Companies and organizations look for efficiency, effectiveness and productivity improvements. The trend toward online training is real and is likely to be permanent.

To meet this need, Online Development has developed FlexTrainingTM. Online Development has been providing custom and packaged web based solutions since 1995, and FlexTraining is our most powerful, flexible, user-friendly product to date.

FlexTraining is a complete framework and delivery system for the development, assembly and management of online training.  It is economically priced at about $2 per student for unlimited courses and is designed to be easy to install, configure and manage.

Web based training software can drastically reduce training costs, effort and complexity while providing a cutting-edge, interactive, multi-medium learning experience.

FlexTraining is a learning management system powerful enough for the enterprise, yet so simple that you can be delivering interactive education in hours rather than weeks.  Testing, course evaluations and skills tracking are also automated and can be activated as needed with a simple mouse-click.

With an ease-of use that is almost revolutionary, FlexTraining gives you the power to build and manage online training courses and testing without programming or complex setup and administration.

Need an Expert?

Instructor-led or completely automated - it's your choice.

The question that many organizations have about web based education is this:

Who trains my students (or employees), the computer or a subject matter expert?

The answer is "both." Even if your training environment contains carefully prepared course material, charts, photographs, assignments, tests and multi-media, your students are still being trained by the content developer. The real question is, What kind of access do the students have to an expert and how much do they need?

The list of possibilities ranges from a high-touch solution, where the training framework primarily connects the students with an instructor, to a more high-tech, hands-off setup. Sometimes you don't want to staff an instructor for each time a course is offered and would prefer to let automation handle the content delivery for you.  Many companies conduct extensive online training without ever utilizing an instructor.

High-tech courses are more often self-paced, while a high-touch offering works best when the class stays more or less together, exchanging ideas and comments as they go using tools like Message Boards and Chat.

FlexTraining is designed with these various scenarios in mind and lets you establish the right mix of computer-based content and instructor interaction.  Assignments, tests, exercises, training plans, course guides, e-mail and online discussions are available to supplement your course content as needed.

Putting it all Together

For most organizations there is a high probability that some form of training material exists already in an application such as Word or PowerPoint, in Flash movies, in audio and video or in your favorite online authoring tool.  You may have invested a considerable amount of time in the development, production and editing of this training content.

A versatile learning management system such as FlexTraining helps you assemble, organize, structure and deploy online training using existing materials without a complex conversion process and without having to start from scratch.

Through a simple web based interface, the FlexTraining Management Center, you will quickly build complete courses, course guides, pre-tests and/or post-tests and perform other management and reporting functions.

Utica National Insurance Group Embarks on e-Learning Journey

In an effort to control training costs and deliver consistent online learning programs to its 1,500 countrywide employees, Utica National Insurance Group is launching an innovative online new-hire training program.  The e-Learning initiative is powered by the latest version of the popular FlexTraining Learning Management System.

FlexTraining is a complete learning management system, which works with any web browser over the Internet or a corporate Intranet.  It lets customers build, deliver and manage custom online training and testing over a local or distributed network.

"Our initial online courses will play a key role in introducing new employees to the insurance industry and the company," said Cherie Mullen, Director of Learning for Utica National.  Course topics among the introductory offerings will include ergonomic awareness, insurance essentials and technical software training. Department-specific courses will then be developed and delivered online to Utica's entire employee population.

With FlexTraining, customers use “system options” to quickly adapt the software to their specific needs, without programming.  FlexTraining also comes with complete source codes, for customers who need to customize their system beyond the considerable flexibility offered by numerous configuration options.

Course material is currently being developed as Word documents, HTML and PowerPoint presentations in conjunction with online testing and tracking features, creating a complete education management system.  "We're excited about the opportunity the system affords us to deliver learning programs to a wider number of people.  To the degree we can greater contribute to our employees' job success, we can contribute to the company's success," Ms. Mullen said.

Utica National Insurance Group is based in upstate New York.  Founded in 1914, Utica sells through independent insurance agents and is among the top 75 property-casualty insurance organizations in the United States.

Kinder Morgan Implements Solution for Operator Qualifications

The Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) passed a new regulation in August of 1999 known as the Operator Qualification (OQ) regulation. This required affected companies to develop a written OQ program and to document that anyone who performs a covered task (company personnel and contract employees) is qualified to perform that task. Qualification meant that the employees had to pass a written test and/or a skills evaluation.

After an extensive search for e-Learning and testing applications, Kinder Morgan chose FlexTraining because of its functionality, flexibility and low cost. The open source allowed the product to be easily customized to fit the specific D.O.T. requirements and to be extremely easy to use and comprehensive for the over 2500 employees who needed to be qualified. These employees are located in hundreds of different locations nationwide, so a web enabled application was essential.

"The FlexTraining Total e-Learning Solution has been extremely easy to set up and administer, and the report builder has enabled our staff to quickly distribute results to the area managers so they can insure that their employees are qualified," said Kinder Morgan's Dave McKittrick.  "Online Development has provided excellent support for the few problems that we did encounter and has also incorporated enhancements that we requested into their latest release. Now that our initial need of providing testing for OQ has been satisfied, we see great potential for this system to provide for a large portion of our future training needs."

Kinder Morgan, Inc. is one of the largest energy transportation and storage companies in America, operating more than 35,000 miles of natural gas and products pipelines and approximately 80 terminals. Kinder Morgan, Inc. owns the general partner interest of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P., the largest publicly traded pipeline limited partnership in the U.S. in terms of market capitalization. Combined, the two companies have an enterprise value of approximately $19 billion.

Extensive e-Learning Search: All Roads Lead JT3 to FlexTraining

The Department of Defense (DOD) has merged the engineering and technical support management of several western ranges into one organization to streamline support for testing and training customers. JT3 is a joint venture company that was created solely for the purpose of providing engineering and technical support to the Joint Range Technical Services (J-TECH) test and training ranges.

The benefits and costs of online training have long been debated. After an extensive search of e-learning products that would provide a low cost yet effective solution, JT3 selected FlexTraining because of the functionality made available for the cost. FlexTraining allows straightforward administrative use to set up and create courses.

The FlexTraining’s Total e-Learning Solution includes features like a web based configuration wizard, quick course-building and authoring, learner self-enrollment, batch registration, reporting and analysis, test results graphing, streaming video support, automated testing, virtual student lockers, searchable document libraries and much more.

“Administration has been fairly easy,” comments Dr. Terry Colton. “The support for the few implementation problems encountered was handled by FlexTraining support personnel in a professional, yet rapid manner.”

While other vendors may route support calls to an overseas or domestic "call center,” developers on-site provide FlexTraining’s tech support. When you contact FlexTraining support via phone or email, you are reaching an actual software developer with hands-on, FlexTraining expertise.

JT3 plans to use FlexTraining for the deployment of many additional online training courses in the future, as the company and its e-Learning initiative continue their aggressive growth.

Questions and Answers

What kinds of training can be performed with FlexTraining?

Any kind of training that serves a distributed audience and needs a practical solution.  Examples might include employee orientation, software user training, technical skills enhancement, continuing education for professionals, computer systems workshops, personal enrichment courses, policy and procedures training, public service and citizen involvement courses and many others.

Exactly what is "Automated Remote Enrollment”?

It means that once you set up and schedule a class (using the FlexTraining point-and-click form-based interface) students can use your training web site to enroll at any time, without your involvement, if you wish.  You can even tell FlexTraining to collect and process credit card payments as the student enrolls.

Alternatively, you can control the entire enrollment process yourself by entering or importing students and automatically enrolling them in selected courses.  A personal training plan can be assigned automatically to each student, or group of students, as needed.

Can I set up courses without help from a technician?

Of course.  After the initial one-time FlexTraining installation, the user/administrator can define courses, schedule classes, approve enrollments, track testing and progress and operate the FlexTraining system through the management center's web based interface.

FlexTraining has become the industry leader by offering straightforward, user-friendly, flexible training solutions.

My company does not have a “server” – can I still create and deliver online training?

Absolutely.  Our Login & Go service offers you a complete, private training environment with all FlexTraining modules and features.  That includes complete authoring, course development, skills tracking, course delivery and automated testing, reporting, evaluations and all the other online learning tools.

Do my students need plug-ins in their web browser?

No.  FlexTraining itself requires absolutely no plug-in software and no download-and-install procedures for the students.  If you choose to have audio, video or special formats in your course material, then you need to make sure the end users (students) have the proper equipment and software.  If your course material is built with HTML, tables, images, photos, etc., then students don't need anything more than a standard web browser.

If I set up a FlexTraining training system, who will train my students, the computer or a live instructor?

The answer is either or both, depending on your needs.  FlexTraining is designed to facilitate direct interaction between students and an optional instructor and among the students in each class.  With FlexTraining, your students learn directly from your prepared course content, from your instructor and from each other in open discussion forums.

Do we need to have an instructor at all?

No, it's up to you.  When you define your course lesson plan (using the management center), you tell FlexTraining whether the course you are building requires an instructor.

You may choose to have all your courses fully automated with no Instructors assigned.  Or, you can mix and match, with some courses self-paced and others instructor-led.

What kinds of materials and references can the courses utilize?

A wide variety.  First, a FlexTraining course can have as many content sections as you wish.  The content sections are the "meat" of the class, flowing in a natural sequence from section to section, much like the lecture series in a college class.  These may be from material you created elsewhere (like a PowerPoint presentation or an HTML page), or courseware purchased from a third party, or Learning Screens created right inside FlexTraining using our built-in Authoring Tool.

Next, a course guide for each class may be built into the course in both a word-processed and/or an HTML (web) version. The course guide and content is normally developed by the instructor or training administrator and may include formatted text, tables, graphics and hyperlinks to external web pages.

The FlexTraining student menus make both formats instantly available to each student.  The course guide may have any number of chapters which would likely be comprised of reference materials and can be thought of as the textbook in a college class.

FlexTraining also includes a unique, searchable document library for each course where you can store images, blueprints, documents, forms or whatever else you need to make available to your learners.  You can activate the library for any class or for all classes, or you may leave it in inactive status altogether.

How long do the online classes last? How many tests and assignments should there be?

That’s completely up to you.  Consider your class size, complexity of the training content and the workloads of the participants. FlexTraining can handle courses of any length and can handle any number of tests (pre-testing and progress testing).

Are tests defined online and graded automatically?

Yes.  The FlexTraining management center lets you build tests as part of the "create a course" feature. You also define how the testing process works for each test, within each course, including:

Tests are graded automatically as they are taken.  The activity reports menu (in the management center) includes online reports that show:

Latest Enhancements

Overview

FlexTraining’s web based training software has been available since January 1999. FlexTraining lets customers build, deliver and manage custom online training over the Internet or a company’s internal Intranet utilizing a standard database and common web server and browser technology.

Leveraging these existing tools means that companies don’t have to spend time and money building a custom solution, shopping or components from multiple vendors, or installing special client "plug-ins" or other software on the personal computers of all students.

It also means greater ease-of-use for online learners because they are using the same interface that they use for all their web access, and each learner has a personal, secure student menu.

FlexTraining is continuously enhanced in order to stay current with modern instructional design concepts and standards to include new features that expand its utility, and to increase its usability and value for our customers.

Course Development & Content Transformation

With FlexTraining utilized by companies and organizations in almost every imaginable industry, canned training courses where "one size fits all" do not always work.  Many companies will use the point-and-click authoring and assembly tools to create their own courses, while others have a continuing need for reliable, economical services in the area of course development and content transformation.

Course Development Services:

Content Transformation Services:

FlexTraining has the ability to deliver to your online learners a wide variety of technology formats. In fact, with the FlexTraining Learning Management System, you can utilize learning content in any format that can be read by a web browser.  This includes HTML, text, images, video, audio, Flash, PowerPoint, Word and formats created by third-party authoring tools like Toolbook. These formats are delivered, tracked and managed without "converting" them into a special format for FlexTraining - they are simply utilized in their native format.

Why then, would a FlexTraining user need to convert content from one format to another? This answer is that you will want to select the best media for your learning content, considering the volume of your material, the technology available to your audience and the connection speeds of your learners themselves.

Almost any information format can be converted to one that makes sense for your learning audience. Some of these "transformations" are primarily automated, while others require a good deal of manual effort.
